Melbourne, Australia (short layover) 2017

Several 24h layovers in Melbourne
  • I will share some ideas for a visit in Melbourne, probably the best Australian city for street art, plus a roadtrip to 12 Apostles
Places visited:
  • a) Downtown Melbourne
  • b) Waterfront
  • c) St Kilda beach
  • d) Roadtrip to 12 Apostles & Great Ocean Road
a) Downtown Melbourne:
  • Melbourne has free tram within downtown limits
  • There is also a public bicycle system and you can get a bicycle with helmet for a full day (24h since rental start) for only 3 Australian dolars (€2) in numerous bike station with a credit card
  • Melbourne is packed with street art so it is a lovely excuse to walk around the city
  • My favourite streets were Hosier lane, Higson lane, Cocker alley and ACDC lane

  • Not only street art, but there are plenty of nice streets with plenty of cafes and restaurants
  • Once in the Botanic gardens you can visit the Shrine of Remembrance you can enjoy nice views of the city

  • Some other relevant areas in downtown are St Paul´s Cathedral or the Arts Centre

  • Renting a bicycle will help visiting Yarra river

  • And if you are interested in sports, there are plenty of stadiums in downtown such as AAMI park (rugby and football), Rod Laver Arena (Australian Tennis Grand Slam in january) or Melbourne Cricket Ground

b) Waterfront:
  • Downtown free tram reaches the docklands and waterfront on the West, where you can enjoy the views, a relaxing walk or several restaurants and cafes
  • Also the Etihad Stadium is located next to the waterfront, offering several sports (football, Australian football and rugby)

c) St Kilda beach:
  • St Kilda is a popular area just 5-6 km south from downtown
  • In the Pier Little Penguins can be observed specially at sunrise and sunset, however I went during early afternoon and I could not see any
  • Nevertheless the area is nice, specially in summer

d) Roadtrip to 12 Apostles & Great Ocean Road:
  • My best experience in Melbourne was visiting 12 Apostles in Port Campbell National Park together with the Great Ocean Road back to Melbourne
  • Something still nice about this visit is that there are no fees to visit the area and parking is free in main spots
  • We rented a car and we drove 3h to reach 12 Apostles, where we enjoy sunrise at 6am

  • Together with 12 Apostles we visited Loch Ard Gorge and Gibson Steps
  • The beach and surrounding at Loch Ard Gorge, where we enjoyed a great nap, are stunning. By far this is the place I liked the most

  • In Gibson Steps you can get down some stairs and enjoy a walk by the beach close to the "12 Apostles" rock formations
  • On the way back we decided to drive the popular Great Ocean Road, with lovely views around the coast and plenty of possibilities along the route
  • Apart from lunch, we stopped at Apollo Bay, both at Marriners lookout and by the beach
  • I wished I could have time longer time in this area but I am happy we took the most of our day

  • Hope you find this information useful :)
