Bali, Indonesia (short layover) 2017

Several 24h layovers in Bali
  • I will share some ideas of what can be done in Bali during a short layover
Recommendation:
  • I do not like organized tours so I recommend to rent a scooter next to the airport in the motorcycle parking for approximately €5 per day and explore any of plenty of attractions of Bali
Places visited:
  • Uluwatu
  • Nusa Dua
  • Tegenungan waterfall
  • Ubud monkey forest
  • Tegallaland rice terrace
  • Tanah Lot temple
  • Canguu beach
  • Besakih Temple
  • Mount Batur

Uluwatu:
  • Less than 1 hour south from the airport you can find Uluwatu, where the popular Uluwatu temple (€2 or 30,000 Indonesian Rupiah) can be visited. The best of this place is the views of the cliffs and beaches more than the temple itself

  • Along Uluwatu area there are several incredible beaches to enjoy, and surf here is very popular. You can enjoy a few hours for just €3-4 (50,000 Indonesian Rupiah)

Nusa Dua:
  • On the South Eastern part you can find Nusa Dua, popular for fancy resorts (I personally do not recommend this area unless you are looking for luxury). I just have a picture of the beach there but you can find info about several resorts

Tegenungan waterfall:
  • Approximately 1 hour North East from the airport I visited this nice waterfall. Nice spot on the way to several other attractions  (€1-2 or 20,000 Indonesian Rupiah)
Ubud monkey forest:
  • Ubad has a wide offer, and one of the popular places here is the Monkey forest, which as the name inidcates it is a nice forest full of monekys (€3-4 or 50,000 Indonesian Rupiah)

Tegallaland rice terrace:
  • Driving 20 minutes North from Ubud I visited some of the most iconic rice terraces in Bali. This place is beautiful and completely free (however there are a few locals asking for a donation)

Tanah Lot temple:
Another popular temple by the beach which can be visited less than 1 hour far from the airport  (€3-4 or 60,000 Indonesian Rupiah)

  • To visit the main temple you might need to cross a bit of sea water depending on the tide
  • Also, during this drive several other rice terraces can be appreciated
Canguu beach:
  • I did not take photos in this beach but I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon practising surf
  • Again, you can enjoy a few hours for just €3-4 (50,000 Indonesian Rupiah)
Besakih Temple:
  • On the way to Mount Batur you can visit Besakih Temple (or Pura Besakih), a series of temples on the slopes of Mount Agung, the highest peak in Bali exceeding 3,000m
  • Before reaching this area, on the east coast of Bali there are several nice volcanic beaches
  • Due to Besakih proximity to that active volcano, sometimes the road has signals "prohibiting" the access to the road that leads to the temple
  • However I drove the scooter since almost the temple, some locals stopped me and asked me for some money for showing me the temple
  • Despite asking for 100,000 local at the beginning, they were contented with just 30,000 (€2)at the end

Mount Batur:

  • Apart from amazing beaches and rice fields, Bali offers as well several hiking options
  • One of the most popular is Mount Batur, especially during the night for the sunrise
  • However I could only do it during the day but it was beautiful as well
  • Beware of some locals asking for money in order to guide you through
  • I found very easy to get rid of them with my own transport as I just drove my scooter till the trekking start, a few km far from their office (they were asking for lot of money actually: 500,000 local or $25)
  • There are very nice views along the road
  • During the trek you have nice views of the lake as well

  • But the most beautiful part is the top and you can enjoy a relaxing walk around the caldera, where there are some humble camping and resting areas

  • On the way back I stopped by Batur Natural Hot Spring, a business about hot water pools, massage, views of the lake, etc
  • There are a few similar businesses in that area but I do not know their entrance fee
  • In Batur Natural Hot Spring the entrance fee was rp150,000 (€7) or 180,000 (€8) including lunch
  • Compared to Mount Batur hike I was not very impressed about this hot spring but it was not very expensive and I was very pleased to try my first full hour Balinese massage there for extra 120,000 local (€6)

  • Looking forward to keep adding info to this post, hope it helps :)
